Abstract:
Represented on both sides of the double-sided icon no K692 (45.5X33.5) in the Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens is St Roch. During recent conservation of the work in the Museum, an inscription was revealed on one of the sides written in Greek and Latin characters, recording that the specific representations was painted in 1743. The icon is extremely interesting in that the figure of the same saint, illustrated in a different manner, appears on both sides. From the stylistic traits of both representations, it is concluded that they are works of two artists and were painted in different periods. The painter of the side with the inscription is more conservative and apparently familiar with the methods and techniques of Byzantine painting, in contrast to the painter of the other side, who follows Western models.
