Abstract:
The article presents a series of views and working hypotheses on design issues in Byzantine architecture. Specifically, it discusses the well-known Byzantine practice of copying models, which can be detected through the similarity frequently observed between two or more churches, and the process of copying and imitating sophisticated models from nearby churches, a process in which should perhaps be sought, beyond aesthetic choices, symbolic ramifications associated with the Medieval concept of the relationship between ‘archetype’ and ‘image’.
