Abstract:
A bronze censer in the Malcove collection is examined in this article. Comparisons to German censers of the twelfth century allow for a new place of origin and firmer dating. The decoration of the piece clearly displays Byzantine influence. Double incised circles with central dots have been copied from a common Byzantine decorative device found on crosses and household items in various materials; it may have apotropaic purpose. The keyhole-shaped openings can be found on Byzantine bronze stands for processional crosses and often has a kind of architectural reference. This motif may be seen in a number of German censers, and is probably a holdover from the Byzantine influence brought in during Ottonian times.
