Abstract:
The only known signed icon of the Cretan painter Nikolaos Ritzos (1482-1503) depicts the Deesis, surrounded by ten Gospel scenes, Saints Peter and Paul holding a church and the Three Hierarchs. The iconography follows Palaiologan models. The painter would have used the anthibola of his father, the renowned painter Andreas Ritzos, and thus the icon echoes the iconography of the Cretan School of around the mid 15th century.
