Abstract:
This study concerns three funerary monuments located in the skete of Agios Andreas in Karyes (tomb of righteous Bessarion 1862), the Zografou Monastery (cenotaph of the 26 Martyrs, 1873) and the Saint Panteleimon Monastery (tomb of Theodorović Giakoubovski, 1874). The study of the typology and decoration, as well as the construction of these monuments, is co-examined in the context of the ideology of pan-Slavism, which permeated Mt. Athos in the second half of the 19th century, though not yielding the results sought by its propagandists.
