Abstract:
The article discusses the thirteenth-century icon of StPanteleemon, which is kept in the Sinai monastery (Fig. 1) andis decorated on the frame with 16 scenes from the saint's life. These representations are correlated with the Orations, Encomia and Synaxaria referring to the saint, and are concurrently paralleled with those depicting the same subjects inother Byzantine monuments, such as the codex MS 9/382 inthe National Historical Museum, Moscow (Fig. 3), and thewall-paintings in the church of St Panteleemon at Nerezi,Skopje (Fig. 5). Presented too are vita cycles of the saintwhich are encountered in the wall-paintings of four unpublished churches in Crete, specifically St Panteleemon and StDemetrios at Perivolia, Chania, St Panteleemon at Voûtas,Kissamos (Figs 4, 7 and 8) and the homonymous church atProdromi, Selinos (Fig. 2). Last, there is brief mention ofrepresentations in Western art, in the stained-glass windowsof Chartres cathedral. The study concludes with the view that possibly the firsticonographie cycle of St Panteleemon - or perhaps singlescenes from his life, miracles and martyrdom -was depictedin the church that houses his tomb, in Nikomedeia, in thesuburb of Adamantius Scholasticus, to the west of the city, close to the shore. The cult of the saint spread from Nikomedeia also to Constantinople, where there were seven oreight small churches and chapels dedicated to him.
