Abstract:
A private collection in Athens includes an icon with the Three Hierarchs, carrying the signature of the Rethymnian painter Emmanuel Tzanes and the date 1669. The work reproduces the fifteenth-century iconographic type and displays the typical traits of the painter’s art: solid structure, firm drawing, rich palette, detailed rendering of the figures. An icon of small dimensions, it was probably intended for private devotion and, as the subject matter indicates was commissioned by an Orthodox client.
