Abstract:
In recent years, different types of Byzantine and Italian painted glazed pottery have come to light in the excavations at ancient Messene. Presented are fragments of green and brown painted ware, glazed painted ware and sherds of vases produced in Italian workshops, such as Proto-Maiolica and Archaic Maiolica. Study of the material indicates that during the twelfth and the early thirteenth century Messene was part of a network of regional exchanges encompassing the Peloponnese and central Greece, whereas from the thirteenth and particularly in the fourteenth century contacts with various regions of Italy became closer.
