Abstract:
This article analyses the composition and the theological content of the icon of the Tree of Jesse with the Virgin and her parents, which is deposited in the Hellenic Institute of Venice. The work carries the signature of Emmanel Tzanes and the date 1644. In this representation extolling the role of the Virgin in the Incarnation, two iconographic subjects are combined: the Tree of Jesse (in a concise version) and the Caress of the Virgin (following the iconographic scheme of a Post-Byzantine icon in Kastoria).
