Abstract:
Antonio Palomino (1655-1726), a Spanish painter and art theorist, wrote a treatise entitled El museo pitorico y escala optica, first published in Madrid in two volumes (1715-1724). In the third part of the work among the Lives of 226 artists, that of Domenikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco) is included. The article investigates the reasons why Palomino enhances El Greco as a hero of Spanish painting, to whom ‘all the masters of this art owe eternal gratitude’.
