Abstract:
This article presents pieces of sculpture kept in the mosque of Chalkis, which are dated to the Middle Byzantine period. Carved in techniques typical of the tenth-thirteenth century, most of these come from the town of Chalkis and are decorated with representations of animals and mythical creatures. Their art reflects that of important centres of sculpture production, such as Athens, Thebes, Thessaloniki, and supports the view that there must have been considerable movement of artisans, as well as cultural and artistic contacts between regions of mainland Greece during the Middle Byzantine period.
