Abstract:
Known to scholarship, the church of St Nicholas, of trefoil plan with narthex, in the small village of Platani in Achaia, is a typical example of church building of the so-called Helladic School and one of the very few surviving Byzantine churches in the northwest Peloponnese. The aim of this study is to present, as far as this is possible, the monument’s building history, through the examination of specific features of its construction and morphology which have not been observed previously or have been misinterpreted, in order to achieve a fuller understanding of its original form and interpret certain of its peculiarities.
