Abstract:
This paper examines the iconography of the Annunciation in an icon painted in 1640 Cretan by the Emmanuel Tzanes. The theme in the upper part of the Annunciation is a representation originating from Western iconography, in which the pre-eternal plan of God on the Salvation of Mankind is depicted. On either side of the Annunciation eight scenes with biblical prefigurations of the Virgin are placed, the iconography of which harks back to models developed in Cretan painting from the first half of the seventeenth century.
