Abstract:
This article discusses the use of cutlery at the Byzantine table from the fourth to the mid-fifteenth century, as this can be reconstructed on the basis of archaeological evidence, relevant references in texts and visual representations. Despite the piecemeal nature of the sources, there are sufficient data to enhance the role of Byzantine cutlery not only as utilitarian objects but also as means of displaying the social and economic status of their owners/users.
