Abstract:
St. Eudokimos (BHG 607) lived in Cappadocia during the 1st half of the 9th century. He was descended from an aristocratic family related to the Maleinoi and the Phokades. He was an army officer, died at a young age and was buried in Charsianon. He acquired the fame of a miracle-worker and his tomb evolved into a pilgrimage site. This was abruptly brought to an end after the translation of his relics to Constantinople at the request of the family. Due to the attempts of his family and the support of the Church the veneration of Eudokimos in the capital was already established at the end of the 9th century St. Eudokimos was linked with the church of the Virgin in the area of the Hexakionon. His cult was popular in Constantinople at least until the age of the Palaiologans. A number of miniatures of the saint survive, whereas depictions of him in monumental painting are rare.
