Abstract:
The major purpose of this study is to describe selectdemographic and socio-cultural characteristics associatedwith the five social classes of the social structure in an urbanPennsylvania community. Classes are delineated by the HollingsheadIndex of Social Position. Description of the class characteristicsis made more fruitful through use of this index. Thestratification procedure demonstrates that stratifying a populationenables us to better understand the organization andfunction of a community as a sociological entity.
