Abstract:
During the modern industrial era there have developedseveral significant changes in urban land use and transportationpatterns. These changes are largely tied to the use ofenergy in combination with new technology. This paper seeks to examine how urban land use and transportationpatterns have responded to continually increasingper capita energy consumption levels.New energy consumption levels associated with expectedenervi shortages are also examined. It is theorized thatthe spatially-expanding urban complexes of today will beginto solidify and become more densely utilized with respectto both land use and population settlement. This newurban spatial pattern will highlight the need for sound andcomprehensive regional land-use planning.A model of planning organization in such a context is proposedwhich seeks to achieve regional development objectiveswithin the context of declining per capita energy consumption.
