Abstract:
Evidence has already shown that Nikolaos Doxaras, the first born son of Panagiotis Doxaras, leading figure of the so-called Heptanese School, was involved with the written works of his father. He had copied an anthology of translated texts by his father, on the art of painting, (see manuscript extant in the Biblioteca Marciana Cod. Marc. Gr. IV 50-1117). Yet, it seems that Nikolaos, was further involved with the written works of Panagiotis. His signature in Italian, as found in a document in the State Archives of Lefkada (notary I. Karvellas, book 3, no. 6, pg. 39) proves him to be the writer of a note, written in Italian, in another anthology of translated texts on the art of painting by Panagiotis, (see the Ms. extant in the archives of the Historical and Ethnological Society, code no. 6). The note on f. lv (the title-page of the anthology proper being on f. 3r) regards a recipe on the preparation of a kind of substitute of the colour gold. The text suggests an Italian and most possibly a Venetian source. Moreover, as a recipe on the art of painting, it enriches the anthology, but in a way too, it also interferes with its contentsproper: it negates in a way, the more difficult technique of gold-leaf application a bolo which his father had inserted in this very same Manuscript (f. 32r-34r). This note on the Ms., which now shows Nikolaos its owner, suggests his knowledge but also his involvement with the texts of the anthology on the art of painting. Furthermore, it allows us to formulate valid hypotheses on his interests as a painter and specifically for practices regarding gold coloring, which research now needs to prove if used in practice by either him, as painter or by other painters of his day and age.
