Abstract:
Excavations in the area of Tripitos near Sitia brought to light a small butimportant town of the Hellenistic period, the name of which is unknown despite theexistence of the abbreviated name ΠΟ on the town's own coinage. Study of the findssuggests that it was a port belonging to Praissos, the important Doric city in EasternCrete, and that it was destroyed together with Praissos in 146 BC by theHierapytnians. The 64 stamps on the handles of trade amphoras which were found during theexcavations not only clearly show the trade relationships of this region and theexistence of wine trade with the wine producing regions of Rhodes, Cnidus, Cos andother less known places but they also enrich our knowledge about the trade ofamphora, their places of origin, and their chronology.
