Abstract:
This article presents the editio princeps of an inscription from Nikete (Nomos of Chalkidike) with the following text: Βασιλέως Φιλίππου Σωτήρος καί Κτιστού It is part of a monument (altar, thymele etc.) erected under Perseus for Philip V or (mohr probably) under Philip V for Philip II. Since we do not know of a city founded by Philip in this region, the attributes κτίστης and σωτήρ probably refer to deeds of the king for the benefit of the entire Macedonian kingdom. Philip II was responsible for the re-organisation of the kigdom, and his example was followed by Philip V. The insription was found in a site of a small Hellenistic settlement; there are also a few finds of the Archaic period. This site is on the main road from Kassandreia to Sithonia. This road is designated as βασιλική οδός in the acts of the Monastery of Xeropotamos (14th cent.) and was in use until 1954. According to documents of the years 1312,1318 and 1320 preserved in Athos there was a παλαιόπυργος at this site. It is still open to discussion whether this παλαιόπυργος dates to the Hellenistic period or the new inscription was a spolium used for its construction.
