Abstract:
The funeral grave stele found in Didymoteicho, though with no further informationregarding its archaeological context, is the first certified gladiatorial monument ofancient Plotinopolis. The marble, rectangular plaque depicts a standing gladiator in«glory», wearing a zone (balteus), a plastron (προστήθιο), a subligaculum, a manica onhis right hand, his left one resting on his weapons. The iconography indicates thatthe gladiator should be identified as a secutor. The accompanying inscription, a kindof concise curriculum vitae, provides information about his name (Mάτερνος κεῖμαι),the external characteristics (νέος Ἡρακλῆς), the intellectual level (ὃ μούσαις ἶν ἄριστος), the excellent training and victorious ride in the arena (καὶ ἐν λούδοις ἶν ἄλειπτος), the victory over his opponent (τὸν Πασίνεικον κτείνας) and, finally, hisown death (καὶ αὐτὸς συνκατέβην). The inscription, the architectural type of thestele and the characteristics of the relief, rooted in the tradition of dueling monuments, point to a date at the end of the second and the early third century AD.
