Notes:
I am honoured and delighted to dedicate this paper to Professor Dionysios Anapolitanos. No one has done more for the development of logic and philosophy of science in Greece than him and it is largely to his endeavours that the subject is so well developed there and that Greek universities have such an international standing in the subject. Earlier versions of this paper were given as an address to a general audience at The University of St Andrews and the University of Cambridge
