Abstract:
The present essay presents a reconstruction of Athenian 4th century BC monetary and fiscalpolicy, focusing on Nicophon’s currency law and the fiscal reforms of Lycurgos, which I interpret as a «social contract». The revenue and expenditure sides of the budget are estimated. Lastly some questions concerning interest aggregation under direct democracy are elucidated.
