Abstract:
In this paper we describe and evaluate the largest tanker losses that have occured before the Torrey Canyon disaster in 1967. The detailed list contains 45 tankers over 5,000 grt, during the period 1946-1966, that were involved in an accident (excluding war operations) and resulted in an oil spill and the total loss of the vessel (including loss of human lives). It is worth noting that these accidents did not create a public awareness and have not been thoroughly investigated by the international shipping community.
