Abstract:
The effects on the Greek economy and society during the inter-war period which were brought about by the transformations in the cultivation, industrial processing and the sale of tobacco are the focus of this paper. The increasing significance of tobacco for Greek agriculture, the tobacco processing sector, the export trade and public finances are examined. It is concluded that during the period 1922-1940, aside from its contribution to the agricultural economy, tobacco became the greatest lever for growth for the national economy as a whole. It provided income and employment for large numbers of the rural and urban population during the inter-war period. However, tobacco also became the focus of great social conflict and broad state intervention which aimed at protecting the position of the country's main export product on the international market.
