Long Waves in the Greek Economy

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to show the extent to which the long wave hypothesis is validated in the case of the Greek economy. The data refer to the normalized a la Kondratieff price index, which reflects the long wave before and after World War II. More specifically, our data show a short period of recovery of the Greek economy which was interrupted from the protracted crisis of 1873-1896; the next stage of recovery which was transformed to the crisis of 1930s and lasted up until World War II. The next recovery continued until the end of the 1960s or the beginning of 1970s and it was succeeded by the "silent" depression of the 1970s. Our data reveal the upturn phase of a new long wave which has already started in the beginning of 1990s.
