Abstract:
This study which is presented in the framework of a larger research project has as its goal the presentation of the social – professional categories which made up the social structure of the Greek State after its liberation. The main professional activities and the taxation of the members of the professions is ascertained by the "occupation tax" law, from which the first signs Otho’ s economic policy are demonstrated. We discovered that the majority of the professions were ranked in categories with low taxation. These low tax categories – which were obviously economically weaker – had access to the primary and mainly public education and were interested in the education of their children at least in the areas that we studied. We also assumed that the resultant difference in income between the urban and non urban areas was a basic variable for the oncoming urbanization of the population.
