Ο κυρίαρχος διάλογος για τη σημερινή κρίση στην Ευρώπη εστιάζει κυρίως στις εθνικές και διεθνείς οικονομικές διαστάσεις και στο ζήτημα του χρέους. Όμως, η εμπειρία της κρίσης γίνεται κυρίως αισθητή στο τοπικό επίπεδο, στην καθημερινή ζωή όσων πρέπει να αντιμετωπίσουν τις συνέπειες τόσο της κρίσης όσο και των εφαρμοζόμενων προγραμμάτων λιτότητας. Η εστίαση στην κλίμακα του τοπικού δεν είναι κάτι καινούριο. Ειδικά σε σχέση με αστικά ζητήματα, το τοπικό έχει συχνά θεωρηθεί ως ένα προνομιακό πεδίο για κοινωνικές κινητοποίησεις. Όμως και οι περιορισμοί του τοπικού έχουν εξίσου συζητηθεί, και ειδικά περιορισμοί που αφορούν στη δυνατότητά των τοπικά-εστιασμένων δράσεων να επιφέρουν ευρύτερες αλλαγές. Tο άρθρο αυτό συζητάει τις δυνατότητες και τις προκλήσεις του τοπικού ως κοινωνικοπολιτική αρένα στο πλαίσιο της σημερινής κρίσης στις πόλεις της νότιας Ευρώπης, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τόσο τις ομοιότητες όσο και τις διαφορές τους.
