This paper is dedicated to Prof. K. Sidwell, a scholar with an enthusiastic interest in the study of Lucian and his caustic spirit and humour, two characteristics found also in O'Brien's satirical column. He introduced me to the latter's writings when, upon my departure from Cork in 2006, where I had spent a year as a lecturer in Greek and Latin at University College Cork, he offered me the book to which references are made here: F.
