Abstract:
One of the last performers of Byzantine church music in the Constantinopolitan style, Demosthenes Paikopoulos, was born on the island of Antigone (Burgaz Adasi), one of the Princes' Islands of Istanbul, in 1929. He studied church music under K. Pringos, Archon Precenter at the Patriarchal Church of St. George, in Phanar, Istanbul, and under Thrasyboulos Stanitsas, Archon Lampadarius of the same church. He chanted as assistant chanter (cantor - psaltis) in Chalkedon (Kadikoy), in Pera (Beyoglu), and as 2 n d Domesticus at the Patriarchal Church from 1956 to 1960. He was appointed precenter to the Mega Revma (Arnavutköy) parish, in 1961. After he was deported from Turkey, by the Turkish authorities on October 10, 1964, and he settled in Greece, he continued to chant in churches in Skaramangas, in Kallipolis of Piraeus, and in Aigaleo. He has written books on music and released a series of cassettes and CDs. The presentation of the work of Demosthenes Paikopoulos is concluded with the publication of seven previously unpublished handwritten musical manuscripts.
