Abstract:
The enclosed Constantinople in the late 19th century is very different from that of previous eras. The Westernization of the Ottoman capital affects urban areas, with new types of structures that former did not exist either as form or as typology. This effect did not leave out buildings of various nationalities living in Constantinople, on the contrary the Greeks showed a dynamism and were pioneer in these changes. We examine here how, a newspaper reporter in the Athenian Acropolis in 1892, who was a writer, Alexander Moraitidis, in his book Constantinople. With the North waves published in 1923 with travel memories before 35 years, assumes this potential. His effort tends to demonstrate the continuity of the Byzantine era with the at that time Ottoman reality, but also ever hopes Constantinople to join the national body, then extracted by "barbarians occupators." He makes minor and indirect references to living and thriving at the time Greek Orthodox community, apart from a few references to the Patriarchate and the Patriarchs. Finaly the view is of a westerner who wants to see things from the side of the construction of a tradition, Byzantine, ignoring that time people of the same nation and religion.
