Deadly Banquet. : A Parallel Reading of the Oresteia and the Odyssey

Abstract:
This article studies the dramatic function of the successive bloody banquets (real or figurative) in the Oresteia and tries to show that the idea of these dreary dinners originates possibly from the Odyssey. In other words, it is very likely that Aeschylus (the most Homeric of the ancient dramatists) was inspired in his Oresteia by the death of Agamemnon during a banquet (Odyssey 4 and 11) and, above all, by the slaughter of Penelope's suitors during their last dinner
