Abstract:
In this essay, an initial presentation is attempted of a completely new subject, totally absent from the Greek bibliography and concerning Modern Greek society in the 18th century, namely an attempt to revive the «Literary Salon» in Constantinople. In Europe this institution was maintained by a lady of high society. In Constantinople, this lady was Mme Mariora Rizou, wife of Doctor Tyanites. The relevant sources are collected and discussed, and an historical reconstruction of this salon, which flourished around 1760, is attempted, along two lines, the habitués and the subject matter of the discussions taking place in the salon. The research can be summarised in the following findings: the habitués represented only the highest rung in Constantinopolitan society; the subject matter, on the other hand, covered a wide range of social and literary themes.
