Tο παρόν άρθρο βασίζεται σε μια επιτόπια έρευνα σε δύο δήμους της ελληνικής υπαίθρου που διερεύνησε τη σχέση μεταξύ της γεωγραφικής απόστασης και της χρήσης των υπηρεσιών υγείας σε μια ομάδα ηλικιωμένων και ατόμων με ειδικές ανάγκες. Ο προβληματισμός του άρθρου αποτελεί συνέχεια της αναγνώρισης του «πολυκλαδικού χαρακτήρα των ανισοτήτων στον τομέα της υγείας» (Townsend (1962), και των πολλών διαφορετικών παραγόντων που ενδέχεται να επηρεάσουν τη «διαφορική πρόσβαση στην υγειονομική περίθαλψη σε διάφορες ομάδες» (Oliver & Mossialos (2004). Η ανάλυση των αποτελεσμάτων δείχνει ότι οι μετακινήσεις των ηλικιωμένων και Α.με.Α σχετίζονται με την τοποθεσία της κατοικίας και την πρόσβαση στις υπηρεσίες υγείας. Ταυτόχρονα διαπιστώνεται ότι η αυξημένη απόσταση από τον πάροχο μειώνει τη χρήση των υπηρεσιών υγείας επειδή οι επιλογές των χρηστών περιορίζονται από χωρικούς και περιβαλλοντικούς παράγοντες.
