Abstract:
The soul derives its origin from heaven and in the long run returns to it. The ideas concerning the immortality of the soul, the after-life rewards and the periodical regeneration are based on Pythagorean beliefs. Plato calls the soul «divine». The Orphico-Pythagorean doctrine on the transmigration of the soul. The theory of purification through science is undoubtedly Pythagorean in origin as are the ideas on «purgation» and «recollection». The pre-Platonic theory on harmony in the soul brings the Pythagoreans in contact with Plato.
