Abstract:
This paper has been basically concerned with attempting to describe and interprete some certain differences among the various Greek dialects within the generative grammar framework. In contrast to the traditional grammar, this modern linguistic theory not only deals with the observation of the different grammatical phenomena in each dialect, but also tries to establish scientific interpretations for the observed differences between two dialects. All the examples given in this paper have shown that, while the underlying representations between two dialects cannot be different, their superficial differences can often be due to the rules that relate underlying representations to their respective surface forms. Specifically, it has been shown that the addition or the loss of one or more rules to one of two dialects and the reverse order of their identical rules are the main reasons that make their respective grammars different
