Abstract:
Unlike Aeschylus and Sophocles, Euripides—controversial in his own life—has also remained controversial for posterity, and his character as well as the value of his work still provoke dispute. What was Euripides ? A rationalist, a realist or an idealist ? How can we explain a discord in him which made it difficult for him to create a harmonious whole ? To my mind, Euripides was a genuine child of his age. The essential character of his work must he seen in the light of the reciprocal relationship between the poet and the sophist movement, which then was beginning to make a fundamental change in Athens' cultural life.
