Abstract:
In this study, I have tried to bring to light some interesting aspects and details of family life and education in the ancient world overlookedJÎor a long time. In doing this, my main concern was to show how greatly even our modern society and family can be benefited and taught by a brief study of ancient family and social life. All the information is primarily based on ancient Greek and Latin sources. Needless to say, more emphasis is placed upon the Greek "writings and authors like Plato, Aristotle, Aristophanes, Plutarch, Xenophon^and Theophrastos. Restricted by the limits of such an essay, I omitted the chapter of Marriage in antiquity with which, however, I plan to deal extensively at another time. The essay includes five topics : 1. Procreation of children; 2. Festivities on the day when a child is born and given his name; 3. Divinations - Superstitions - Amulets. A short section, in this topic, deals with the religious view and tradition regarding the evil eye and superstition in general ; 4. Procurators of children and Paedagogues ; 5. Education and Training.
