Οι ανανεώσιμες πηγές ενέργειας μπορούν να συμβάλουν στον μετριασμό της κλιματικής αλλαγής αλλά και να δημιουργήσουν νέα μοντέλα οικονομικής ανάπτυξης. Ενώ οι περισσότεροι διατείνονται ευνοϊκά στην ανάπτυξή τους σε εθνικό επίπεδο, όταν είναι να αποφασίσουν σε τοπικό επίπεδο οι αντιδράσεις πληθαίνουν. Η διεθνής βιβλιογραφία έχει εστιάσει ότι οι αντιδράσεις αυτές οφείλονται σε παραβιάσεις της διαδικαστικής και διανεμητικής δικαιοσύνης. Στην παρούσα έρευνα υιοθετήθηκε η ποιοτική έρευνα λόγω της πολυπλοκότητας του φαινομένου. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, πραγματοποιήθηκαν 30 συνεντεύξεις όπου έλαβαν μέρος άτομα από τον ακαδημαϊκό, εκπαιδευτικό και τον κόσμο των επιχειρήσεων. Εξήχθησαν συμπεράσματα που συμφωνούν με άλλες διεθνείς έρευνες εντούτοις, η ισότιμη μεταχείριση τοπικών κοινωνιών και εταιρειών, όσον αφορά το σχεδιασμό και το διαμοιρασμό των οφελών από τα συγκεκριμένα επενδυτικά σχέδια χρήζει περαιτέρω διερεύνησης. Επιπροσθέτως, ο ρόλος της Εκπαίδευσης για την Αειφόρο Ανάπτυξη θεωρείται σημαντικός στην καλλιέργεια δεξιοτήτων ενεργού πολιτότητας
