Abstract:
Lucretius and Seneca in spite of their differences have conmon points referring to the period, the personality, the aim of their work, the perspective in which they see things, the pessimistic disposithon etc. The dependence of man on the cosmic necessity, the consciousness of decay and mortality of man, the fear of death, the self-destructive behaviour, the necessity of evil within and outside man, the mental and moral confusion, the contradictions in man, life and civilization, generally the sense of a hard law of cosmic and human things, source of lifelong anxiety in man, form apessimistic psychology. This pessimism is not radical and nihilistic but a reaction of their reforming moralization to the eternal problems of man and society in periods of violence, confusion and moral decay in connection with their character, experiences, personal expression, the aim of their work and the philosophical principles of the schools which they belong to. Besides. this negative psychological and evaluative attitude, according to its content and the factors which form it, is realistic, philosophical, empirical, partly historical and dramatic (the cosmic and human nature impose the impasse of hyman state). The pessimistic and personal tone is Seneca is more intense and hisprospect more modern.
