Abstract:
A short report of the archaeological research in Macedonia is presented here. The interest of earlier travelers in Macedonia, such as J. Stuart and N. Revett, E. Cousinery and W. M. Leake and the topographical research of Th. L. Tafel are mentioned, while the contribution of the pioneer archaeologist-excavator of Macedonia, Leon Heuzey was the first to indicated the location of the city of Philippoi and to start the excavational research at Vergina (one Macedonian tomb and the palace). He also had a broad vision to mention that this area is the Pompei of Macedonia. The research of prehistoric Macedonia, started in the years before the World War II, are also presented in this paper. The excavational research of K. A. Romaios, M. Andronikos and G. Bakalakes at Vergina are presented as well as the excavational research of G. Oikonomou, Ph. Petsas and M. Siganidou at Pella and that of G. Soteriades, G. Bakalakes and D. Pantermales at Dion. These three sites yielded finds providing valuable evidence for the Macedonian history. Finally, the excavation of the significant Archaic cemetery at Sindos carried out by A. Despoine is also pointed out. The report is also referring to the excavations of the prehistoric sites of Nea Nicomedeia, Asseros, Kastanas and Toumba of Thessaloniki.
