Abstract:
The small village of Spelia is located on the foot of Mt. Vermio in modern Eordaia of the province of Kozane. The first Macedonian tomb of Upper Macedonia was discovered by the foot of a hill whose surface is covered with Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine finds. The tomb consists of two chambers (inner dimensions, 3.36 m. wide, 6.52 m. long, while the length of the chamber is 4.12 m.). The façade of the tomb is Doric with four semi columns whose upper part is only fluted. These support the entablature consisting of eight triglyphs and seven metopes. The pediment of the façade disguises the arch of the vaulted roof of the two chambers. Relief shields with painted decoration are found between the semi-columns of the façade. There is no painted decoration in the interior of the tomb; the main chamber is equipped with a stone kline and a table. The tomb was looted in modern times. The construction of the monument dates to the second quarter of the 2nd century B.C. and contained nine or ten burials dated down to the 1st century B.C. The grave-goods consist of pottery, female terracotta figurines, strigils and three bronze coins.
