Consolidation of monuments in the provinces of Kastoria and Florina

The consolidation of the basilica of St. Achilleios on the island of the lake of Small Prespa and the Natze’s house at Agios Nikolaos in Kastoria are being described in this paper. The ruins of Ag. Achilleios (10th century), a basilica with a nave and two aisles and a narthex (20x37 m.) only survive. The plan is preserved while just some parts of the upper construction survives. Although the restoration carried out in the past, the decay of the monument has not stopped. The first part of the consolidation was carried out in summer 1987, including the consolidation of the lower parts of the monuments with pointings and restricted rebuilding. The new mortar consisted of clay, lime and a small portion of white concrete. The Natze house (18th century) is a three-storey building whose third floor is decorated with murals and wooden decoration. The lower part of the walls is made of stones and mud, while the upper part of stones and wood («bagdati» and «tsatma» techniques). The decay of the wooden roof and the wood of the walls is quite expanded. The repair of the roof and the walls was carried out in 1986 and 1987.Ag. Nikolaos of Kasnitze (12th century) is one of the most significant monuments of Kastoria, decorated with important murals and clay relief decoration .It was restored in 1952; the wooden roof was replaced by a new one of concrete. The imperfections of water-proofing and the inadequate ventilation caused severe damages to the wall-paintings. The solution was the removal of the tiles and plaster, which were replaced by other tiles fixed without plaster, the construction of a wooden roof covered by a geomembrane for waterproof, the perforation of the concrete for the ventilation of the church. This solution can also be easily changed
