Abstract:
A pit-grave dated to 540/30 B.C. was found by the eastern wall of the trench ofthe Macedonian tomb excavated by K. A. Romaios. The grave contained the firstArchaic burial excavated at Vergina, and was accompanied by significant grave-goods mainly consisting of terracotta figurines, Attic and Corinthian pottery, bronze wares and silver and gold jewellery.A very important Macedonian tomb was also discovered in the same area, east of Romaios’ tomb. It is a parallelepiped construction (10.60x7.50 m.), disguising the vaulted roof of the antechamber and the chamber in the interior of the tomb. The door between the two chambers was found almost opened by the looters. The rear wall of the main chamber looks like an Ionic building with four semi-columns, entablature, frieze, cornices, all preserving their painted decoration. Furthermore, a door and two windows decorate the facade of this Ionic building. A splendid marble throne occupies the southwestern corner of this main chamber (2.01 m. high and 1.18 m. wide). It is decorated with relief gilt ornaments and figures, while its painted back is the most impressive element of the decoration: Plouto and Persephone are standing in a charriot and look forward. The pottery found inside and outside the tomb dates the monument about 340 B.C.
