Abstract:
A big mound by the eastern bounds of the village of Vergina was excavated in1987. The excavation revealed that the tumulus covered a relatively big Macedonian tomb which was looted and furthermore, its major part was destroyed. A small part of the façade and lesser parts of the walls were only preserved, while architectural members were scattered in the adjacent area! The tomb consists of two chambers (10x5 m. outer dimensions, 8.50x3.85 m.inner); poros slabs were placed in the opening instead of a door, while a marble door connected the main with the ante-chamber. The façade of the tomb is characteristic with four Ionic semi-columns; parts of these columns and their bases consisting of double scotiae are only preserved. Furthermore, only one of the four capitals, made of a soft stone has survived. The remains of the coloured plasters and the walls indicate that the surface of the walls was divided into zones painted with different colours (black, red, white). The architectural members and the very few small finds (lamp, part of an iron helmet, some sherds) date the monument to the early 3rd century B.C. and they also reveal that the deceased was a man. The destruction and the scattering of the stones must have occured in the antiquity, maybe even in the 3rd century B.C. This is the second funerary monument suffering a total destruction at Vergina (the first being Tomb IV of the big tumulus); though the reasons remain unknown. Finally, the discovery of this last monument increases the total number of the Macedonian tombs with Ionic façades and the examples of Ionic architecture in Macedonia
