Abstract:
The recent excavation in the canal area at Pella recorded that the architectural complex consisting of a large circular building and three smaller ones, recovered in earlier excavations, was incorporated in the grid of the ancient city since the very beginning; this was achieved by two roads (6 m. wide) east and north of the complex, running north to south and west to east respectively, and also by a monumental paved road (9 m. wide) west of the complex running north to south; the latter was equipped with special pedestrian-paths on either side. The research in the interior of the large circular building indicated that the rectangular building of the early 4th century, occupying the eastern part, was extended westwards in the third quarter of the 4th century B.C., founded in a thick layer of ash and other burnt materials from the fire in the 4th century B.C. The large perimeter wall with the three circular constructions attached to the circumference was built in the end of the 4th century B.C. founded in a layer of earlier remains. Meanwhile, the buildings southeast and west of the perimeter wall were built in the early Hellenistic period and were still used in the late Hellenistic period. The perimeter wall was not used during the last phase of use of the building; a large open to the sky area is found between the southeastern and the western buildings, while another perimeter wall of mud-bricks was built hy the northern and eastern boundary of the complex. This building complex by the canal of Pella was probably used for gatherings of people associated with the public life or with big festivals. The connection of this building with religious ceremonies in honor of a deity or with the cult of a heroe is still not documented
