Abstract:
Ten burial mounds (tumuli) were known in the area of Pella, located on either side of the Royal Road (later called via Egnatia) and other ancient roads. Meanwhile, recent topographical and excavational research revealed five more; two of them were systematically excavated. The seven mounds east of Pella are located on the slopes of very low natural hills extended to the area south of the modern road connecting Edessa with Thessaloniki. Thus, they are quite prominent while the tombs were easily cut into the relatively soft calcoreus rock of the area. Most of these tombs were lootedin the antiquity.A looted cist-grave of the easternmost tumulus dated to the 3rd century B.C. has been excavated. The second tumulus west of Pella is the largest; it is a double tumulus and probably contains an unlooted Macedonian tomb. The first of the recently discovered mounds is located at "Paliomylos”, on the northern side of theancient road running from Pella to Ichnes, while the second is located at the "Stanetou Petrouse”. This latter is low with a big diameter; a settlement of the Neolithicperiod occupies the hill where the mound was erected. The third, called "Mound A of Rachona” has been recently excavated: it contained two looted cist-graves dated to the last quarter of the 4th century B.C. Funerary monuments were found south of the mound; one of them was crowned by a marble lion dated about 320 B.C. The fourth, identified as "Mound B of Rachona”, is located on the eastern side of the ancient road running from Pella to Europos. Finally, a huge funerary monument has been recently discovered by the ancient town of Archontico. It consisted of a circular base of seven rows of stones and dates to the middle of the 3rd century B.C. For unknown reasons the monument remained unfinished.
