Abstract:
In 1982 started the excavation of a big building complex in the eastern part of the ancient city, where workshops, shops, baths, an atrium and a court with four columns were discovered. The excavational research in an area of 100 sq. m. north of the atrium was carried out in the summer of 1987. The floor is covered with a mosaic decorated with geometric motives, chain patterns and emblemata (panels enclosing various representations). Dionysus is represented in the central panel. The god is standing on a chariot holding a corn and athyrsos, supported by a paposelinus, while two sea-centaurs hold the bridle of the sea panthers who lead the chariot. The bodies of the sea-monsters and the waves of the sea are represented in the lower part of the panel. The composition is flanked by six smaller panels decorated with theatrical masks inspired from Dionysus’ cycle. The mosaic is dated about 200 B.C.; its quality is superb and it can be compared with those from Antiocheia. The bronze fulcra of a kline were also found in this room: horse heads, Heracles’head, Omphale and the head of a young silenus. Furthermore, four statues of philosophers with missing heads were also found in this room; these were probably moved to this room for temporary storage. Three heads of these statues were found in the stoa of the new atrium which has now started being excavated.
