Abstract:
A cemetery containing cist-graves of the Late Bronze Age III B-C period was discovered on one of the northwestern slopes of Mt. Olympus (1000-1100 m.high),above the plateau of Agios Demetrios. The area, which is plenty of springs, is very important strategically and also apropriate for cultivation, cattle-breeding, timber felling and hunting; thus, all the conditions for a permanent settlement are fulfilled. Thirty-four cist-graves lined with slabs were excavated. These were built at the bottom of a large pit, covered with a layer of clay. The burials are inhumations with slightly contracted bodies, while removed burials are often found by the walls of the graves. The wheel made pottery follows the Mycenaean tradition. The "perfume-bottles”(jars) predominate among both the wheel —and the handmade pots, while there is an evolution of the shape of the Mycenaean alabastra, dated between the IIIB and IIIC periods. Apart from the pottery many buttons, necklaces of glass, amber etc., and seventeen stone seals, known as magic seals, were also found among the grave goods.
