Abstract:
Many rescue excavations have been undertaken in various parts of the Table (trapeza) which surrounds the mound of Ano Toumba in Thessaloniki. The excavation of two building-grounds in 4 and 6 Ortansia street, on the northwestern part of the Toumba, yielded habitation remains dated to subsequent phases, from the Bronze Age down to the 4th century B.C. According to the archaeological data, it seems that the north-western part of the Table constitutes an important part of a city-grid of the Archaic and Classical period. The rooms which have been excavated there probably belonged to private houses comprising rooms for the preparation of the food and others containing looms. The location of this ancient settlement, 50 m. high, with a torrent running near the foot of the hill, and being less than a kilometre far from the sea, provided the conditions for an organized society which could furthermore control the surrounding area. Indeed, the settlement must have been one of the most significant of the Thermaic Gulf, surviving until the founding of Thessaloniki.
